Darken the room, sink low in your chair, turn the volume up (the soundtrack is spectacular), and fall into this movie. Even the English dubbing isn't bad, even if it is a little bit fast (to keep up with Japanese). Ghost in the Shell has been embroiled in a whitewashing controversy for the past two years, ever since Scarlett Johansson was announced as the lead in January 2015. If you liked the old Max Headroom television series or movies like Wargames, this will no doubt appeal to you. Warning: This story contains spoilers for Ghost in the Shell. This movie ought to appeal to anyone who enjoys cerebral films. (Not that cute wide eyed little girls shouldn't fight evil, I mean, I'm all about fighting evil, aren't we all?) Ghost in the Shell, on the other hand, represents the best of its genre and the best of any genre is worth a watch. I'm not into monsters and tentacles or cute wide eyed little girls fighting evil. Scarlett Johansson’s upcoming movie Ghost in the Shell is facing a lot of controversy for whitewashing a beloved Japanese anime. Most plot descriptions of anime films sound boring to me. They are storming twitter and hashtagging WhitewashedOut in protest. I am not an anime fan and haven't seen a lot of anime films. But what is it all about Jack in for a closer look at a vision of the possible near future by Marco Attard.
Much has been made of the artwork, and with good reason. Ghost in the Shell: a transmedia franchise nearly 20 years old, yet relevant more than ever with its transhumanist themes, cyberpunk stylings and, perhaps most importantly, kickass female figure known as the Major.
